House FireDid you know that tens of thousands of residential fires occur in apartment buildings every year, killing hundreds and injuring thousands more? Fires are especially dangerous in apartments because the flames can spread until they envelop more units within the building. As we move toward winter and get ready to turn on the heater, it's a great time to review fire safety. Follow these tips to stay safe this season.
  • Inspect all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure that they're working. This is also a great time to pop in fresh batteries. If you find a problem, immediately report it to the landlord.
  • Speaking of your landlord, ask him or her when the sprinkler system and chimney (if you have one or both) were last inspected. It may be time to set up new inspections to ensure everything is in working order and that the chimney is clean.
  • If you use space heaters, keep them at least three feet from flammables like curtains and furniture, and remember to always turn them off when leaving the room or going to sleep.
  • Similarly, candles should also be kept away from flammables and extinguished when leaving or sleeping. They should also be placed in stable holders and kept out of reach of children and pets.
  • Electrical issues are a common source of fires. Always use light bulbs with the correct wattage, never plug large appliances (like the washing machine) into extension cords and ensure that the insulation around electric cords is intact on all of your electronic devices to prevent short circuits.
  • Kitchens are another common source of fire ignition. Never leave cooking food unattended, turn pan handles in toward the wall to prevent them from snagging on clothing, keep towels and other flammables away from cooking surfaces and always turn off the heat before sitting down for meals.
